Train Ride to Whittier

An F22 Raptor finishes its morning exercises and lands at Elmendorf Air Force Base

Our first night in Anchorage was entertaining as the sunset was at 11:30 PM and it never got past twilight until 1:20 AM, just to have it start brightening up again one hour later. Luckily the curtains were thick and we weren't too grumpy after being awoken by F22 Raptors flying nearby. We spent yesterday walking around downtown Anchorage and dining at a few great restaurants. We rode the Alaska Railroad down to Whittier from Anchorage which follows the spectacular Seward Highway most of the way before it heads east through the Whittier Tunnel.

During the 1964 Alaska earthquake, the ground sunk enough for the salt water from Turnagain Arm to get into the roots of these trees, killing them, yet also preserving them.
